The Brief

Freedom Wheels is a Solve-TAD service which supports clients (children and adults living with disability) who cannot ride a standard bicycle, to be able to ride independently for the first time. Each Freedom Wheels bike is prescribed by a Solve-TAD therapist who sets up the supports attached to the bikes to support posture and position based on the client’s physical and cognitive needs. The Freedom Wheels system is a series of modular support attachments to help stay on the seat, hold on the handlebar, keep feet on pedals and maintain balance.

To expand their distribution channels and reach more people wanting to ride for the first time, Solve-TAD intends on creating an online portal/app to improve and streamline the therapy assessment and bike build process. With a goal to engage regionally-based therapists on a contract basis and send pre-made bike kits for our regional volunteer network to assemble and deliver to clients. Freedom Wheels volunteers are responsible for packing, assembling and showing the child how to ride the bicycle.

This brief focuses on the research and design of a digital experience that can help guide the bike assembly process. Students are to speak to the Freedom Wheels volunteers to understand the bike build process and come up with a digital solution that can guide new volunteers on the correct steps for the bike build as well as provide value to veteran volunteers to allow them to improve the work they do.
